Stationary OPzS type Batteries are supplied in transparent (translucent) plastic containers
The individual cells are placed in translucent/transparent containers made of styrenacrylonitrile (SAN), which is extremely resistant to chemical influences and mechanical damage.
The batteries are characterized by field-proven long life, low water consumption,
and low self discharge rate.
CONSTRUCTION:
The positive armor plate is of a tubular design, which means that the active substance (Pb02) is contained in special bags made of polyester fibers, and hardened by an impregnating compound. Such construction prevents the potential escape of the active material during operation, and ensures a long operating life.
The grids of the positive and negative plate are made of special alloys with additional agents for the improvement of the crystalline structure in casting. Negative plates are mass-type plates with special alloys maintaining a porosity of an active material during the operation. Separators dividing the positive from the negative plates are made of micro porous plastic material with low electrical resistance for higher efficiency and lower self-discharge rates.
The electrolyte level is clearly visible due to the transparency of the containers. The maximum and minimum levels are marked on a self-adhesive acid-resistant label on the side of the container.
A cell plug seal (ceramic filter) prevents leakage of any sulphuric acid vapors, however it does not restrict hydrogen and oxygen flow.
CHARGED VERSION:
Batteries can be used immediately as they are normally filled with electrolyte and electrically charged. The capacity tests are performed at the factory prior to dispatch, and may be re-confirmed on site by the end user when required.
APPLICATION:
OPzS Type Stationary Batteries are intended for applications including utilities, telecommunications, computers, emergency lighting, alarms, control and monitoring systems in power plants and distribution stations, on railway stations, airports, etc. Due to the extremely low levels of self-discharge, they are also suitable for photovoltaic applications.
OPERATION & MAINTENANCE:
At 80% DOD the recharging time with IV characteristic (V = 2.35V) depends on the initial current (I). With initial current I5, the 85% of recharge is achieved in approximately 4 hours and the 100% recharge is achieved in an additional 5-6 hours. It is recommended that the OPzS type batteries be installed in systems where they are constantly connected to a rectifier. The batteries can be charged with a voltage of 2.23 - 2.25V/cell, or in case of rapid charging, with voltage of 2.35 - 2.40 V/cell. Rapid charging usually last another 3-5 hours after the voltage has already reached 2.35 - 2.40 V/cell. Afterwards, an automatic switchover to the constant float charge voltage of 2.23 - 2.25 V/cell will suffice.
Battery maintenance is reduced to a minimum. Under normal operating conditions, only distilled water is added every 2-3 years.
The electro-chemical characteristics of OPzS Type batteries vary with temperature. Float charge voltage adjustment is recommended to avoid overcharge or undercharge conditions.
The table above gives details of the required float charge voltages at annual mean battery temperatures between -15°C (0°F) and 40°C (110°F) allowing for a ± 5°C (41°F) tolerance without further adjustments for temperature compensation.
The normal float current observed in fully charged OPzS Type batteries at 2.23 vpc +/- 1 % and temperature of 20°C (70°F) in the 0.2 - 0.3 mA/AH rating.
The recommended recharge method of OPzS Type batteries to maximize the battery life is to use a constant voltage equal to the float charge voltage (2.23 vpc +/- 1 % at 20°C / 70°F) with a maximum charge current of 0.5 C8 Amperes. Using this procedure, the recharge times at different values of maximum current. Fully discharged cells (100 %) are shown in the following table:
If it is necessary to reduce the recharge time, the IV recharge method previously explained can be used with a maximum voltage of 2.4 V/C(+/-1 %) at 20°C (68°F) with a maximum current of 0.25 C8. However, this recharge procedure is recommended in cases where frequent depth of discharge (below 40 % C10.) occur.
STORAGE:
OPzS Type batteries are delivered filled, charged and ready for installation. If the cells cannot be installed immediately, then keep all in a fresh, clean dry room. Furthermore, considering that on open circuit batteries lose part of their capacity due to self- discharge (2-3 % per month at 20°C / 68°F), a float recharge is recommended. Do not store the batteries without recharge longer than the periods indicated below. Float recharge consists of applying a voltage of 2.27 (+/-1 %) V/Cell for approximately 48 hours.
